Yes, the US economy may be in a very sorry state right now, but in no way should you take that as a reason to stop reaching for the stars in terms of your business endeavors. It’s true—you can make your dreams come true even if the economic crisis has hit you and your family hard. In fact, you should be even more determined to succeed; once you’ve hit rock bottom, there’s no way to go but up.

Bear in mind, however, that the following tips won’t make you get rich quick or anything of the sort. This advice is meant for those who want a slow and steady climb to the top—which is, in truth, the best way of going about things in the first place.

1. Avoid fads.
If you want to set up a particular business or support a particular industry, steer clear of fads as much as possible. If you want to make your dreams come true, you have to base them on something that won’t disappear into a puff of dust after six months. Invest your time, money, and efforts into something time-honored and foolproof. If you seriously think that you can make big bucks peddling some newfangled exercise system, you’d better think again!

2. Focus on something family-friendly.
It may be tempting to dive into businesses that cater mainly to adults and their vices, such as tobacco or alcohol, but that kind of strategy is for fools who think they can get rich quick by preying on others’ weaknesses. Is that how you want to succeed? What our economy truly needs right now are family-friendly businesses. Make your dreams come true by being an entrepreneur with integrity, and you will definitely go far despite hard times.

3. Involve friends and family.
When the economy wasn’t as bad as it is now, it was quite easy to hire people to help you out with your business endeavors. Now that the financial situation isn’t what it used to be, turning to your friends and family for assistance would be highly recommended. Make your endeavor something that can benefit everybody. Turn it into something that can make your dreams come true, and can also make your loved ones’ long-term goals a reality as well.

4. Avoid luxury goods.

The last thing you need to be peddling in this day and age are luxury goods, so avoid doing so. What people are clamoring for right now are simple, down-to-earth necessities such as food, clothing, and toiletries. You can certainly get rich quick if you successfully sell one fancy sports car after another, but who’s going to achieve that in this economy? Be realistic about your goals. The worst thing that could happen is to be entirely dependent on wholly unrealistic strategies in the hopes of making your dreams come true.

5. Go for cheap but reliable materials or ingredients.
If your business depends on making things from scratch, be it apple pies or study desks, it would be wise to use cheap yet reliable materials or ingredients for your products. Yes, it would have been far better if you could use that quality chestnut wood for your furniture, or lots of fresh golden vanilla beans for your desserts, but in these hard times, you’ll have to make do with cheaper but dependable alternatives. Once you’ve made your dreams come true on a budget, only then you can move on to manufacturing pricier wares.

And there you have it! Take the above pieces of advice seriously, and you could soon be working your way to ultimate success despite the financial crisis. Remember that no obstacle is ever big enough if you put your heart and soul into what you do.

Good luck, and don’t forget to relax!
